Bharati Mukherjee was born in 1940 in Calcutta, India. After her graduation from university in India in 1961, Mukherjee moved to the USA, where she earned her Ph.D. Currently Mukherjee teaches at the University of California.

Both Mukherjee and her husband are writers. In addition to their individual work they have produced two books together. The short story “Nostalgia” was first published in 1985 within the short story collection Darkness.
